Local garden centers and retail nurseries are brimming with new pots for spring and summer gardening! Practically anything can be grown in a container, including many trees. But, before you dash to the nursery to buy plants, take time to plan what you want from your container garden. 🌱Do you want to grow vegetables, herbs, or flowers? A tree?
🌱 Where are you planning to set up your container garden?
🌱 Is there enough light (or too much?) for the plants you want?
🌱 Is your growing season short and you are looking for something that can be easily moved to come inside, such as a lemon tree?

After you’ve thought about the plants that you you want to grow, consider the environment and space you’ll need. Plants need light, food, air and water, but the quality and quantity varies from plant to plant and choosing the right space for your plants is critical.

Study seed packet plant descriptions, refer to Sunset’s ‘bible’ Western Garden Book, or visit online resources to find out how to grow plants with similar requirements together.

Did you know that we grow over 50 different varieties of flavorful tomatoes including hard-to-find and heirlooms? Of the 36 million households with home gardens in America, 86 percent grow tomatoes, according to a study of home and community gardening by the Burlington, Vermont-based National Gardening Association (NGA). Tomatoes can be grown in raised beds, in the ground, and even in pots. Here are some tips for choosing which varieties to grow.

For the most successful tomato crop, it’s important to choose varieties that are well adapted and recommended for your region.
You may also want to consider buying varieties that are disease-resistant or tolerant, especially if your garden space does not allow you to rotate crops. Look for variety names followed by the initials V, F, N, T, and A. They stand for resistance or tolerance to the most common tomato problems: verticillium wilt (V), fusarium wilt (F), nematodes (N), tobacco mosaic (T), and alternaria (A).
.
Stretch your harvest season by planting tomatoes with staggered maturity dates. For example, you might plant at least one early, mid-season, and late season tomato in your garden.
